FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Below are some answers to questions we get asked quite often. Check back here from time to time as this page will be updated as we deem necessary.

Q: Why should I pay for webspace when I can get a free home page from my ISP?

A: Most free webspace providers either limit the amount of space or bandwidth you may use or will place advertising on you site that you may not deem appropriate. Many free home pages do not support the use of cgi / scripting which means that you can not have counters, guestbooks, or any page that is program driven rather that html driven.

Q: Why should I pay for maintenance on my website?

A: Simple: If a link or page on your website stops working properly, your business looks unprofessional. Scheduled maintenance will catch such problems and fix them for you. It is also a good idea to make regular changes to pictures or the appearance of your site to keep it fresh. If you have to pay for these changes or updates on an "a-la-carte" basis it can become quite expensive!

Q: Shouldn't the cost of designing my website cover the maintenance?

A: No. The cost of design is just that, design cost only. The webmaster will make sure that you site works properly when first published on the web, however if a file or link goes down later it likely has nothing to do with the design process. Reloading your site or resetting links that have changed take time and time is money.

Q: What is bandwidth and why does it cost money?

A: Bandwidth refers to the amount of traffic or how busy a website is. There is a cost tied to bandwidth because the busier a site is the more a servers' resources are bogged down. Therefor busier sites have higher costs associated with them.

Q: Can I register a domain name with a .ca extension?

A: Yes! The Canadian registery process is now set up much like the .com domain, and names are available on a first come, first serve basis.
